Cleaning Out Your Small Business: 3 Common Forms of Waste and What to Do with It

Having to clean out your business premises because your furniture and equipment need to be upgraded is both a blessing and a curse. It shows that business is going well, but it's also rather a lot of work. You and your willing helpers will need to arrange proper disposal for the items that are to be discarded.

1. Furniture

Any old office furniture that is still usable should be sold or donated. A large scale donation of quality used objects can actually contribute to your company's charitable credentials if it's important to you that your business gives something back to the community. Contact your nominated local charity for collection during your office cleanout. Broken furniture that cannot be repurposed as is can simply be discarded in the skip bins you've hired. Disassemble or carefully break down these items as much as possible to maximize space inside the skip bin. They will later be recycled.

2. Documents

Any documents placed inside the skip bin will also be recycled, but you need to consider the information actually printed on the paper. Would the potential release of this information be a data breach? It might be the case if the papers in question relate to customer information or even privileged business information, whether it's current or not. When there's only a small amount of paperwork to be discarded, consider having someone in your office shred these papers before placing them inside a cardboard box, which can then be dropped into the skip bin. When there's a considerable amount of paperwork, it can be best to use the services of a document destruction company.

3. Electronic Items

Don't throw away any electronic items without seeking permission from your chosen skip bin company. Many forms of electronic waste will not be accepted and will need to be discarded at a special e-waste recycling facility. This is due to the potentially hazardous components inside many such devices and the complexity of disassembling them for efficient recycling. To err on the side of caution, you might want to nominate someone in your office to perform a thorough wipe of all computer hard drives and electronic devices with storage capability before these are discarded. Some types of simple e-waste might be suitable for the skip bin, but be sure to ask.

Given the different classifications and potential sensitivity of the waste produced during a business clean out, it's important that you take steps to make sure everything is discarded in the best possible way.
